Zambia’s Founding Father and First President His Excellency Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda was laid to rest in the capital Lusaka on Wednesday, July 7, 2021.
Dr. Kaunda, 97, passed away peacefully at Maina Soko Medical Centre on 17th June, 2021.
During a church service at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross, His Excellency Dr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, President of the Republic of Zambia said the story of Dr. Kaunda, fondly remembered as KK, will be etched in Zambia’s history and will be told by generations.
“We are coming to the end of a very difficult moment in the history of our country – the passing on and subsequent mourning period for His Excellency Dr. Kenneth David Kaunda. But I must hasten to say that we shall forever celebrate Dr Kaunda’s life,” President Lungu said.
The President urged the Kaunda family to continue living in peace and harmony.
“Continue to uphold the legacy of Dr. Kaunda and continue trusting in God,” President Lungu said.
President Lungu said a number of Presidents, Heads of State and Government, representatives of world leaders as well as multilateral organisation travelled to Zambia on 2nd July, 2021 and mourned with the people of Zambia in appreciation of the works of Dr. Kaunda.
“We thank them for their gesture and appreciation. A special thank you to all the countries and their peoples who declared days of national mourning in honour and memory of Dr. Kaunda. We have also continued to receive messages of condolence from all over the world. We thank these countries and leaders for mourning with us,” President Lungu said.
The President also said he was aware that many Zambians would have liked to turn up in numbers to bid farewell to Zambia’s founding father but they heeded the advice to follow proceedings on national television and other media platforms.
The President commended Zambians for the support rendered to the Government to manage the funeral programme in a manner that enhanced adherence to COVID-19 public health guidelines.
“I thank you most sincerely fellow mourners,” President Lungu said.
